Expiriments and Grow-a-Long

55*, 94% humidity, N 5 mph wind, mostly cloudy

I've started my micro greens under the lights experiment. I think it would be neat to have some fresh greens growing inside the house during the winter time. We shall see if it works out or not. You are supposed to harvest the mix at 3 inches in height.

I mentioned to one of my neighbors that I will be growing giant pumpkins next year for fun. He thought it would be fun too and also wants to grow a giant pumpkin and we can compete against each other for the largest one. I'll buy the seeds and split the pack with him. We both don't have the spots for them tilled up yet so we are going to rent a tiller in the spring and split the cost for a day's use. I won't have room in my veggie garden for my pumpkins so they will be planted on the other side of the house but I'll have to put up some kind of wind protection as it's windy over there. It will be interesting to see who wins---- He uses chemicals in his garden, I'm organic. We both grew pumpkins this year and he got nothing off his vines while I got 3 nice pumpkins on my plant and all I gave mine was some composted manure at the beginning and some water now and then. It even had a terrible case of borers and the stem was split wide open, yet it was still trying to make more fruit to the very end...what a tough bugger.

For those who want to grow along as well, leave me your blog/ web page address and I will set up a special links section on the side bar for your grow along progress reports. :) Jessica already left a comment that she would like to join the fun. I think I should come up with a nice prize for the winner, don't you?

Things you could be doing now could include prepping the soil for your pumpkin and choosing seeds. Just so you know, I'll be going with Atlantic Giants but feel free to use any type of big pumpkin seeds you'd like. I'd love to see you blog about this.

This is an informal contest, if you can weigh yours that's awesome but for those of us who don't have colossal scales, I think there is a formula for estimating the weight of your pumpkin by measurements. I am trusting everyone to be honest about their pumpkins :)
