Meat Rabbits
25*, feels like 14*, 83% humidity, W 12 mph wind, light snow
As you can see, our weather is back to normal seasonal winter crud. I was afraid my outside plants would start thinking that it was time to grow which would be disasterous.
Yesterday I took the first step in raising my own meat here at GGG. Mr. Hyper and I drove up into Michigan to rescue a bunny that was heading for freezer camp with his siblings. Buttons, a nice chunky youngster about 10-11 weeks old, is a Dutch. They are supposed to have the best meat to bone ratio for a meat rabbit even though they aren't big rabbits. This guy was the chunkiest in a pretty big litter of kits and so has some good genetics to pass along. He's also very friendly and calm natured. Even when Little Osa is poking him with her paw through the cage.(Silly kitten.) Now I have to find him a special girlfriend for when he gets old enough to start likeing girls and of course an outside hutch needs to be built for them.
When I was a child, I had gotten a white rabbit for Easter one year. It grow to be about 15 lbs in the first year but was mean as anything could be. Her name was Daisy. She would kick and bite. It was no fun keeping her and one day, something got into her cage and dragged her off...In pieces. I did not think rabbits were great pets untill Mr. Hyper brought home the adopted Rex named snuggles. Boy was he a lover! He would run circles around my feet, put his paws on my leg and "bark" at me when he wanted to play and run around the house like a maniac when he was happy to see me...and he was always happy to see me. It's too bad someone had to come along and murder him >:(. I'm definitely going to have LOCKS on any outside rabbit hutches from now on.
Since I was visiting, I gave my friend some African violets, of which I had extras of since they were growing well and budding up nicely. I hope she enjoys them!

2 seeds of thought:
Meat rabbits! I can't wait to read about your experiences breeding (and eventually eating) them. My husband would love to raise rabbits for food. Someday.
Good Job! :)
