Green Leaffy Veggies and Coles Line Up

20*, feels like 16*, 86% humidity, SSW 6 mph wind, fog, FLOOD WARNING

If it seems like I'm posting a lot today, it has to do with the fact that I'm antsy. I'm waiting for the weather to warm up and then I will be going hiking, checking out some fens I have heard of by word of mouth up in the dunes. It's supposed to be above freezing today. I'd like to enjoy that so I'm willing to wait a while.

Now back to the subject at hand!

  1. Beet, Detroit Dark Red (the tops are greens yummy as well as the roots)
  2. Kale, Dwarf Blue Curled, Vate's strain-- Dwarf my butt. I grew these things last year. I'm not going to grow as much of them as I did though, as I didn't eat much of it. This year I have to make sure I eat them! These are Ferris Morris seeds.
  3. Lettuce, Butter crunch--at the top of my head, I don't recall what company these came from. I'll update later.
  4. Lettuce, Grand Rapids-- I think I got these from Pinetree Garden Seeds, but I can't remember right now.
  5. Spinach, Bloomsdale Long Standing--This spinach ROCKS! I see no need to try other kinds...These guys even lasted almost all the way through the winter, and if they had a layer of straw over them they just might have kept me in greens until spring! Sowing them every few weeks gives you greens all through summer too. Mmmmmmm.
  6. Asparagus, Mary Washington--Wouldn't Asparagus technically be a green? I mean you ARE eating a leaf stalk! I bought these seeds from Pinetree Garden Seeds. Yeah, yeah, I KNOW they will take longer to make spears then just buying the roots. But HONESTLY if you KNOW GGG, you KNOW that if I can make a "project" out of it, I will. Just so I can say "Hey look what I grew from seed, the rest of you are cheaters!" (wink)
  7. Broccoli, Nutri-Bud-- This has one of those names that sounds like its a hybrid, but in fact its an OP kind, from Pinetree Garden Seeds. I've never tried it before but I had so much luck last year with a hybrid variety, i thought I'd try this one.
  8. Brussels Sprouts, Falstaff--This will be a new veggie to grow for me. I love eating Brussels but I've just never grown them. I think I've been a bit afraid to! Anyway this is an OP variety from Pinetree Garden Seeds. ( I think they should pay me for endorsement *wink wink)
  9. Mustard, India- Southern giant Curled--Another new one, I'm not sure If I'll even like mustard. It sounds...spicy and I don't do spicy. If nothing else, I can be animal food eh? These are Ferris Morris seeds.
  10. Cabbage- Wirosa-- A hybrid from a seed trader, I've never grown cabbage before, I'm not particularly fond of cabbage either in the raw form but I don't mind it cooked in soups or stuffed so I likely won't grow but a couple heads of it in trial.
  11. Cabbage, Chinese, Michihli--Also new to me, but I like Chinese cabbages better then round cabbages and so will likely try about 4 plants of these.
